For the last 18 years, Alan has seen the Last Planner System as 5+1 conversations that bring a project to life. He now realizes that it is at least 8 structured conversations. In this session, Alan will introduce the promise cycle which sits at the heart of the system. Each of the 8 conversations helps build project knowledge and makes the LPS the engine for everyday learning and everyday improvement both in design and construction.
The team at DPS Global has been applying and integrating SCRUM with Lean Construction implementation for the last decade. Aiden O’Dwyer and Willie Power will present three case studies of how they are utilizing the SCRUM methodology to support the Last Planner System and Target Value Delivery. They will explore the synergies between SCRUM, LPS and TVD, and share challenges as well as opportunities for improvements.
The owner’s representative and construction manager for a new highly complex research & development facility “pRED Center Basel” will share some of their approaches to deliver the project. Besides the methodological skills, the challenges of the technical complexity in design and execution they also had to work intensively on the mindset of the team. In this session they will share their challenges and what they have learned so far on their ongoing project journey.
The presentation will show the advantages of the Last Planner System application in one of the most iconic works in Europe, the Sagrada Familia, Spain's Cathedral Project. Fernando will speak about the current state of Lean Construction in Spain. He will present applications of Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) in Spain, explore the development of LC in Spain, and give an overview of where the industry is heading.
How is Lean Construction applied in projects around Europe? What are the main lesson-learned from teaching Lean Construction and getting organizational buyin for it? And how local and regional factors influence Lean implementations? This and more will be discussed in the Lean Champions panel, with representative from France, Ireland, Switzerland, UK, Austria, and Lithuania.
The use, mastery and management of Takt Planning has allowed projects to drastically reduce construction schedules by 30% to 50% and meet tight construction constraints and deadlines. In this session, Fabien will explain the fundamental principles of Takt, how to make Takt Planning work, and what are the main benefits. He will also share a case study to demonstrate the Takt Planning method in action.
The Norwegian construction industry experience a considerable and growing interest in takt time planning and how to apply it. In this session, Sigmund, Sigmund, and Marte from Veidekke will demonstrate how takt time planning was used in a residential project including 342 apartments. They will also share the success factors – and certain stumbling blocks – on their way to reach the full potential of using Takt for production planning and control.
Stephan describes his Lean journey as a journey in the material world where he tries to create opportunities to improve quality, deliver on time, enhance collaboration and satisfy customer needs. In this session, Stephan will discuss his Lean journey and touch on the importance of the human factor and humanness to build a Lean culture. He will also discuss how Félix Giorgetti, a general contractor in Luxembourg approaches Lean Construction and foster a Lean culture
Delivering projects with complex success criteria, e.g. UN Sustainability Goals, requires collaboration. A decision-making process is critical to understand the different perspectives and to support cross-disciplinary conversations. Choosing by Advancing (CBA) is a system that supports transparency and traceability when a team has to deal with contradictory criteria. In this session, Annett and Randi will discuss why decision-making methods are crucial to deliver sustainable projects and how CBA enables cross-disciplinary conversations.

Highways England has been on a Lean journey for more than a decade. In this session, Neal and Derek will talk about how Highways England started their lean initiative, how they got executive support and buy-in, results they have gained from early implementations, and lessons they have learned along the way. They will also share the current initiatives at Highway Englands to sustain the vision, encourage continuous improvement, and involve the supply chain.
Lean Construction is gaining momentum in Spain, both in private and public companies. In this session, Juan Felipe and Manuel will explain a methodology they have created that combines LPS, Takt Time, Visual Management, 5S, and the concept of Big Room. They will also discuss how the method was applied in the construction of a school building and how the project was completed in only 11 months, despite two DANA storms and COVID19.
The BB12 is a large and highly complex hospital project in Switzerland. The project team utilized LPS and other Lean tools to manage the overall project. In this session, Reto will share his perspective as an owner and explain why owners need to help promote Lean Construction. He will also discuss how Lean Construction helped them create an environment that fosters transparency, openness, shared responsibility, and acceptance of diversity
There are many challenges in developing and implementing a new workplace renovation for 2,300 employees in the shortest possible time during ongoing operations, while not disrupting the creative processes of the employees. To meet these challenging goals, the owner relied on Lean collaborative project management. In this session, Claus and Andreas will discuss the integration of the owner, craftsman and the end-user in the project execution and commissioning.
What are the main areas of research for Lean Construction in Europe? How do university professors engage with industry practitioners? What role do universities play in increasing Lean adoption? This and more will be discussed in the Academic Panel, with representatives from leading universities in UK, France, Norway, Germany, and Finland.
The implementation of Lean processes has created the demand for new, decentralized project delivery models, such as the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). In this session, Daniel will discuss how Construction 4.0 might change the project delivery models, how can Integrated Project Delivery be used to manage projects in a time of Construction 4.0 and what new forms of project delivery models are needed or are possible.
A critical aspect of any project delivery is understanding the real reason for problems and then systematically eliminating these problems to improve the next project. In this session, Maria will provide an overview of one of the most powerful systematic problem-solving tools, the A3 report. She will illustrate the A3 report in action with several case studies, discuss the pros and cons and explain how this method can be pivotal to support your continuous improvement journey
Data-driven dashboards, and related remarks and alarms, makes potential project problems visible from early on and helps identify early warning signs. This can also enable us to predict if a project will face any problems and hence mitigate that before the situation escalates. In this session, Sakari will demonstrate how data-driven dashboards support Lean Construction efforts in multiple different ways and how you can't manage what you can't measure.
In this session, Niklas will discuss how to make sure that construction projects not only “hit the ground running”, but also how projects can establish a strong culture of continuous improvement. Niklas will shed light on how really successful projects use knowledge about construction excellence (Lean Construction, Virtual Design, and Construction, IPD, collaboration, etc.) together with innovative pedagogy and smart technology in order to develop their team into an improvement engine.

The Lean Construction Blog Conferences are one of my favorite ways to connect with others working to improve project delivery. I personally loved how the participants engaged in live Q&A after each set of themed sessions and continuously interacted throughout the entire proceeding. People were still talking about the learnings months later. I highly recommend attending these events to keep your skills growing for your teams.
In 2020 we saw many conferences and events restructured due to the need for a virtual platform. In my opinion, the Lean Construction in the Field Conderence in September did a great job organizing and planning for a 100% live event. Watching and hearing from the subject matter experts from around the world allowed for real time feedback, questions and answers. I look forward to the upcoming European Lean Construction Conference.
The team at Lean Construction Blog understand how to facilitate a virtual conference. As a speaker, we were able to engage with attendees, receive feed back, and answer questions in real time. This conference provided me with key take aways that I can use to improve workflow on my construction projects. Their conferences are highly interactive, highly engaging, and brought together some of the leading experts in the industry.
