The Lean Construction Blog is hosting a virtual conference on September 15-16, 2021. This is a Lean practitioner-led event and will showcase some of the best practices of applying Lean Construction in the field. This conference is designed to help people working in the construction site including superintendents, project managers, project engineers, and field crew learn Lean practices so that they can improve: the efficiency, effectiveness, and safety of their projects.
Get TicketsWe have a group of internationally-renowned Lean Construction practitioners who are leaders in the industry and in their respective companies. We will host a panel of superintendent as well as lean champions to share stories, compare best practices, and talk about problems that they had to overcome.
We will discuss some of the most important topics in the field of Lean Construction including: how to engage superintendents and foreman with Lean Construction, driving continuous improvement, how to develop capabilities, learning from Gemba, visual management, and making work ready for reliable flow.
The goal of this conference is to help the people working in the field acquire the knowledge and ideas that they can use immediately to improve their construction projects. This conference is aimed at helping both beginners as well as veterans enhance their skills and understanding of important Lean topics.
Understanding the needs of the users in the field combined with continuous improvements has helped Kraus-Anderson Construction transform their construction site labor scheduling. In this session, Karen will explain how continuous process improvement was applied, show the new scheduling process in action, talk about practical lessons learned and explain how a technology overlay can be used after process optimization to enable even greater success.
Teams that focus on a common goal will become more collaborative. Teams often designate a single individual to facilitate the Last Planner System. However, teams experience faster rates of adoption and a deeper understanding of the LPS by clearly defining roles and responsibilities. In this session, Mason will teach you how to build agendas, responsibility matrix, and use accountability to hold teams together during the early roll out phases of LPS.
Senior superintendents / site managers can make or break Lean implementation efforts on a project. When upper management asks these leaders to learn about Lean project delivery, a typical gut-reaction is, "No, thank you!" because being open to change may be misperceived as "Perhaps what I've been doing all this time isn't good enough..." This couldn't be further from the truth! Hear two perspectives on this challenge - one from a prefab evangelist and the other from the Lean coach who had the luck to introduce Lean learning into his world.
By making the Schedule, Look Ahead Plan, and Weekly Work Plan more visual and easy to understand, the Trades will have a clear understanding of the project team's expectations. In this session, Houston will uncover the challenges Trades deal with in understanding the project Schedule, Look Ahead Plan and Weekly Work Plan and how to break down these barriers through visual management.
How can we succeed in applying Lean Construction in the field? What are the main hurdles and how to overcome them? How to get buy-in from management and workers out in the field? How has Lean Construction improved the way we build? This and more will be discussed in the superintendent panel, with real hands-on experiences and lessons learned from the field.
Here is a powerful statement about Lean: “Lean is not something you implement. It is the outgrowth of a culture of highly engaged people solving problems together.” So, how do you engage Supers and Foreman? People can only be fully engaged with the right culture, training, supervisor, and vision of what they can be. In this session, Jason and Spencer will discuss how to get our crucial field positions what they need to take their next step as highly engaged team players.
How many times have you heard “Get it done! I don’t care how you do it” That is one of many phrases commonly used in construction that is plain wrong. When one focuses on the right mixture of capability development with productivity, throughput is increased exponentially. In this session, Adam will help field teams better understand how capability development impacts productivity and provide proven concepts to assist you with establishing capability development programs.
Gemba is a staple of continuous improvement, and a very straightforward first step into the world of Lean. Gemba Walks involve putting yourself on the jobsite (or other work areas) to find ways to remove waste and streamline the workflow. In this session, Brian will discuss how to effectively conduct a Gemba Walk, including basic concepts, ways to use Gemba Walks to enhance improvement, and tips about using Gemba to enhance other lean practices.
Continuous improvement is an important part of any Lean organization. In this session, Art will share some simple ways to improve your project's design and construction outcomes. He will talk about creating alignment within the team, organizing the team to make better decisions, how to cultivate a culture of continuous improvement, how to measure progress, and how to sustain the practice. He will also share some examples of how simple Lean improvements lead to a significant savings in time and money.

People tend to associate construction sites with rough, rude, hardworking, strong men using commanding forces. Some believe those characteristics to be an indicator of success in our industry. But what if there was a different way? A way to engage people, the uniqueness of their strengths in building an atmosphere that is conducive to inclusion, innovation, joy, and high performance. In this session, Dominic and Cory will share a story of how this was done on a project.
Lean tools are an integral part of the shift to a Lean culture, yet Lean tools are most effectively implemented within an environment that fosters collaboration, continuous improvement, and shared goals. It’s a cyclical development of team culture, but how do you start the cycle? And how do you drive engagement in your projects? In this session, Jennifer and Kyle will share their Project Implementation Process for establishing a culture that supports Lean processes.
The employees in the field are where the lean culture begins. In this session, Kelley and Greg will provide actionable templates that others can use to build a Lean field program for supervision and crew members. They will also discuss specifics around training, support, and sustaining of the Lean culture, in addition to KHS&S lessons learned, and how KHS&S is continuously refining their implementation and continuous support processes.
It is a well-known fact that “Respect for People” is one of the most essential foundational principles of Lean Construction. In this session, LaShira will give examples of how to recognize opportunities to gain buy-in in the field from the trade level, by striving for diversity and inclusion excellence.
How is Lean Construction applied in projects across different companies? What are the main lesson-learned from teaching Lean Construction and getting buy-in from the field? And how local and regional factors influence Lean implementations? This and more will be discussed in the Lean Champions panel, with representatives from GH Phipps Construction, PC Construction, Weaver Cooke, Chandos Construction, and Granite Construction.
Everyone has a unique story about their discovery of Lean Thinking – how they were introduced to Lean and how Lean shifted their thinking and approach to planning, communicating and executing their daily work. In this session, Jeff, Jason, Ali and Mike, a team of diverse construction professionals, share their personal stories of the driving forces to pursue continuous improvement and support the efforts of Barton Malow’s Lean Transformation.
Just as Lean did not make its mark in manufacturing until it changed how factory workers perceived and performed their jobs, Lean will not make its mark in project delivery until construction workers do the same. Just like it took a change in manufacturing to Total Employee Involvement (TEI), it will take a change in construction to Total Contractor Involvement (TCI). In this session, Mike will discuss how this change is accelerated when owners are willing to engage.
Continuous improvement goes beyond simply implementing Lean tools. There must also be a culture shift from “the way we have always done things” to collective collaboration and dedication to innovation that will lead to true productivity increases. Using examples from a recent project, Makayla will provide insights into how you can shift the culture to inspire innovation and continuous improvement.
Teams typically struggle with buy-in, accountability, and trust. In this session, Felipe Engineer-Manriquez will share proven methods to make those yesterday’s problems so you can focus on the project’s priorities. Join this session to learn how to implement visual scheduling, effective Daily Huddles, and foster project-wide learning. Felipe will also share ways to improve communication and coordination to decrease frustration and overburden.

The Lean Construction Blog Conferences are one of my favorite ways to connect with others working to improve project delivery. I personally loved how the participants engaged in live Q&A after each set of themed sessions and continuously interacted throughout the entire proceeding. People were still talking about the learnings months later. I highly recommend attending these events to keep your skills growing for your teams.
In 2020 we saw many conferences and events restructured due to the need for a virtual platform. In my opinion, the Lean Construction in the Field Conderence in September did a great job organizing and planning for a 100% live event. Watching and hearing from the subject matter experts from around the world allowed for real time feedback, questions and answers. I look forward to the upcoming European Lean Construction Conference.
The team at Lean Construction Blog understand how to facilitate a virtual conference. As a speaker, we were able to engage with attendees, receive feed back, and answer questions in real time. This conference provided me with key take aways that I can use to improve workflow on my construction projects. Their conferences are highly interactive, highly engaging, and brought together some of the leading experts in the industry.
