The Lean Construction Blog is hosting a virtual conference on September 11-12, 2024. The theme of this year's conference is "Improving the Lives of the People in the Field through Lean". This is a Lean practitioner-led event and will showcase some of the best practices of applying Lean Construction in the field. This conference is designed to help people working in the construction site including superintendents, project managers, project engineers, and field crew learn Lean practices so that they can improve: the efficiency, effectiveness, and safety of their projects.
Get TicketsWe have a group of internationally-renowned Lean Construction practitioners who are leaders in the industry and in their respective companies. We will host a panel of superintendent as well as lean champions to share stories, compare best practices, and talk about problems that they had to overcome.
We will discuss some of the most important topics in the field of Lean Construction including: how to engage superintendents and foreman with Lean Construction, driving continuous improvement, how to develop capabilities, learning from Gemba, visual management, and making work ready for reliable flow.
The goal of this conference is to help the people working in the field acquire the knowledge and ideas that they can use immediately to improve their construction projects. This conference is aimed at helping both beginners as well as veterans enhance their skills and understanding of important Lean topics.
In this session, Colin Milberg & David Mackay will introduce the fundamentals of Lean in the field. This includes the Last Planner System, 5S, Takt, Value Stream Mapping, and Waste Walks. This session aims to provide an overview of the Lean methods, principles, and philosophies that the field can use.
How can large capital projects deploy Takt? What does it look like? What are the advantages of using Takt on such a large, complex, and critical project? How does applying Takt change as the project size and complexity changes? Spencer will share his experience of implementing Takt on several multi-billion dollar projects. He will share his insights and lessons learned on how to be successful on such a project.
Storytelling is a human process that has been around ever since the beginning of history. The way we communicate, tell stories, and align the goals of the team can make a big different. In this session, Charlie will talk about his approach to storytelling and active listen, how you can use these principles to improve transparency, alignment, and project performance. Storytelling is an important part of communication yet no one is really taught how to do it well.
How can we succeed in applying Lean Construction in the field? What are the main hurdles and how to overcome them? How to get buy-in from management and workers out in the field? How has Lean Construction improved the way we build? This and more will be discussed in the superintendent panel, with real hands-on experiences and lessons learned from the field.
Waste walks are a simple yet effective way of engaging the entire organization in continuous improvement and identifying tangible cost savings. In this session, Eric will go through the waste walk program at AECON which has resulted in more than 100 million dollars of savings. He will explain their annual waste walk challenges and how they developed the organization to take advantage of it. He will also share financial metrics on what the Lean program has achieved.
Larry has been on his Lean journey for more than 7 years. Over the years, he has attended several trainings, received several certifications, participated in local LCI community of practice events, and worked with a Lean coach. In this session, Larry will reflect on his Lean journey and go over what has worked and what hasn’t worked for him. The goal is to help people brand new to Lean shortcut their learning and application.
When we talk about “respect for people” what do we mean? Many different people have different definitions of it. In this session, Jen and Jesse will dive into this topic and explain what respect for people means to them. Their version of respect for people can help shed some light on this important topic.
What does a Lean superintendent do? How does a Lean superintendent plan his day and his week? In this session, Josh will take us behind the scenes and show how he organizes his day and week. He will share his daily huddles, coordination meetings, OAC meetings, and how he blocks off time for learning and reflection
When James was first introduced to Lean, one of the first things that he asked was “What’s in it for me?”. This is one of the first things that we hear from others as well. With Lean, we can make measurable and immeasurable impacts on people’s lives. Sure there are things like a more efficient project, more stability of the schedule, and profit for the company. But the immeasurable impacts on people’s lives, their stress levels, and their ability to be treated like a human being are where most of the benefits come from.

In this training session, Colin and David will expand upon the Lean in the field fundamentals and explore key important ingredients in making your field implementation successful. Colin and David will go over mistakes and pitfalls that people often make, explore the soft skills, facilitation skills, and listening skills needed to make the most of your LPS implementation, and what you should do to continuously improve over time.
In this session, Janosch will share examples and case studies from over 10 years of applying takt in construction. He will explore the three levels of takt planning: Macro, Norm, and Micro level. He will explain how his thinking and application of takt has evolved over the last decade and how he adapts takt to different types of projects.
The Last Planner System and Takt are two methods for controlling and improving production in construction. Some teams use LPS, some teams use Takt, and a few use both of them. In this session, Felipe will share an example of how his team has been able to successfully integrate Takt with LPS to get the best results from both methods.
How can we succeed in applying Lean Construction in the field? What are the main hurdles and how to overcome them? How to get buy-in from management and workers out in the field? How has Lean Construction improved the way we build? This and more will be discussed in the Project Managers panel, with real hands-on experiences and lessons learned from the field.
How do we improve quality? What does quality mean for a construction project? How do Lean methods, principles, and philosophies help us improve quality? How does Lean reduce rework, eliminate waste, and produce products that the end users want? In this session, Elizabeth will explore the link between Lean and quality. She will also share the strategy at DPR to use Lean to improve built-in quality over time.
IPD projects allow for early involvement of the construction team during the design phase. But how should the IPD engage with the field team and superintendents during the design and construction phase? In this session, Baris will explain why it is important to engage with the field early on, what that collaboration looks like, and how to use early collaboration to proactively solve problems ahead of time.
As the construction industry evolves, the role of jobsite leaders is expanding to include new challenges that significantly impact the wellbeing of our workforce. Today’s leaders are tasked not only with meeting traditional performance metrics but also with fostering environments that prioritize mental health and inclusion. This session explores how the jobsite can become a crucible for new value systems, integrating practices that build psychological safety into the daily workflows without compromising operational efficiency.
We can all listen more and we can all have more empathy as leaders. In this session, James will explore the topics of active listening and tactical empathy. He will also explain why honing these “soft” skills are important as a servant leader.
With Lean Construction, it is important to train and develop the people who are doing the work. In this case, it is the Superintendents, Project Managers, Project Engineers, and foreman who are on the frontline every day. In this session, Nick will share the unique approach from OShea where they are actively developing their field team’s capabilities in Lean and are seeing tangible results from it.

The Lean Construction Blog Conferences are one of my favorite ways to connect with others working to improve project delivery. I personally loved how the participants engaged in live Q&A after each set of themed sessions and continuously interacted throughout the entire proceeding. People were still talking about the learnings months later. I highly recommend attending these events to keep your skills growing for your teams.
In 2020 we saw many conferences and events restructured due to the need for a virtual platform. In my opinion, the Lean Construction in the Field Conderence in September did a great job organizing and planning for a 100% live event. Watching and hearing from the subject matter experts from around the world allowed for real time feedback, questions and answers. I look forward to the upcoming European Lean Construction Conference.
The team at Lean Construction Blog understand how to facilitate a virtual conference. As a speaker, we were able to engage with attendees, receive feed back, and answer questions in real time. This conference provided me with key take aways that I can use to improve workflow on my construction projects. Their conferences are highly interactive, highly engaging, and brought together some of the leading experts in the industry.
The Lean Construction Blog is an educational blog with a mission to advance and promote Lean Construction around the world.
